Hooch Tragedy 50 People Are Battling For Their Lives

At least 107 people, mostly rickshaws and workers have died after consuming spurious liquor at Mograhat in South 24 Parganas district in West Bengal.

Another 50 people are fighting for their lives in several hospitals including in Kolkata after consuming a toxic brew, official sources said on Thursday.

Post-mortem of all 107 bodies had been made and authorities transferred to the bereaved families.

State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the government considers the demolition of illegal liquor teeth, speaking at a private television news channel.

"I have seen many people die in hooch tragedy several times. And they continue to repeat itself. I call on help from the community and others to rise above political barriers and help to put an end to this social evil," she was quoted as saying.

Describing the death as "unfortunate," she said, "We have to run awareness programs. If the illegal plants regularized government can earn an income. But it would be a disservice to society."

Meanwhile, the state government announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of those who died.

Four people were arrested for the supply of moonshine in a village in the south Sangrampur 24-Parganas district. Magrahat is situated 52 km from Kolkata.

Those ill were admitted to the port of Diamond hospitals, medical centers and nursing homes. Some of them were shifted to Calcutta.

All the people fell ill after consuming spurious liquor from several illegal joints late on Tuesday.

Soon after the incident yesterday, residents pitched block liquor production Mograhat and joints, where it currently sells for Sangrampur.
