Although Stanford
defender Andrew Luck was Heisman Trophy favorite in both preseason
and throughout most of the 2011 regular season, the Heisman race was this wide
open in recent years.
There was a pool about 7-8 players who could do all things, why they deserve to be invited to New York for the Heisman ceremony, but it came down to five: Good luck, Robert Griffin III, Montee Ball, Trent Richardson and Tyrann Matheiu.
In the end, however, the 77th Heisman Trophy was awarded to Robert Griffin III.
RGIII grabbed 405 of 846 first-place votes and 1687 points to take home the trophy, Luck, was second in the second year in a row with 247 points of first place and 1407 points, Richardson received 138 votes and 978 first place points. Ball and Mathieu finished fourth and fifth race in the vote respectively.
"It's unbelievable believable," said Griffin, who threw for 3998 yards and 45 touchdowns overall this season. "For the nation at Baylor, I say it all the time, we may be blessed enough to have more of them in the future."
