Guru Nanak was
born in 1469 at Nankan Sahib village, now in Pakistan. Troubled
by frequent conflicts between Hindu and Muslim communities, he tried to work
out a synthesis of the two religions.
His convictions
gained popularity among the masses and eventually evolved into a religion of
the Sikhs. After
his death in 1539, his students became his successor.
Most of the Sikh
population of India lives in northern India, particularly in Punjab and the
capital, New Delhi.
